Easy chinese sweet and sour pork recipe

Sweet and sour pork is an easy to prepare Chinese dish that is particularly popular in Cantonese cuisine and may be found all over the world. A traditional Jiangsu dish called Pork in a sugar and vinegar sauce (糖醋里脊; pinyin: táng cù lǐjǐ) is considered its ancestor.

The origin of sweet and sour pork was 18th century Canton or even earlier. A record shows that the renowned Long Family in the prosperous neighbouring Shunde county (of the Qinghui Garden fame, and the family was active in the 18th and 19th centuries), used sweet and sour pork to test the skills of their family chefs. It spread to the United States in the early 20th century after the Chinese migrant goldminers and railroad workers turned to cookery as trades. The original meaning of the American term chop suey refers to sweet and sour pork.

Ingredients for chinese sweet and sour pork recipe:

* 1 1/2 pounds boneless pork loin, sliced 1/2-inch thick
* 3/4 cup water
* 1/4 cup vinegar
* 1 tablespoons vegetable oil
* 1 tablespoon soy sauce
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 cup brown sugar
* 2 tablespoons water
* 2 tablespoons cornstarch
* 1/2 cup thinly sliced onion
* 1 green pepper, cut in thin strips
* 1 can (20 ounces) pineapple chunks in juice
* 2 cups hot cooked rice

Easy Steps for chinese sweet and sour pork recipe:

1, Cut pork slices into strips about 3 inches long and 1/2 to 1 inch wide.

2, Sauté pork strips in hot oil over medium heat until lightly browned; drain.

3, Drain pineapple; reserve juice. Combine pineapple juice, 3/4 cup water, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, and salt; pour over pork in skillet. Cover and simmer 1 hour, or until meat is tender.

4, In a cup, combine cornstarch and 2 tablespoons water; stir until smooth.

5, Add cornstarch mixture to pork mixture. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is thickened and bubbly.

6, Add pineapple chunks, onion and green pepper. Cover and simmer sweet and sour pork for 10 minutes longer, or until vegetables are tender.

7, Serve sweet and sour pork over rice. or noodles for a full meal.

Sweet and sour pork is so pleasing to the palate because of the flavorsome sweet and sour sauce–the sweetness from sugar plus the tangy ketchup and sharp rice vinegar–with the crispy fried pork pieces. The green and red bell peppers and pineapple pieces are just icing on the cake.

To save time, you can buy pork cut into thin strips for stir-frying, available in many supermarkets. And Cubed chicken, turkey or beef can be easily substituted for the pork for a tasty alternative. For an even easier meal, make with left-over pork chops or roast pork.
